Forest snowshoe walk with campfire BBQ
Clothing: Overall, boots
Snowshoes are always included. Overalls, boots and gloves are not, so check before you pack.
The short answer
On most snowshoe tours from Rovaniemi you wear the operator's winter overall and boots over your own warm layers, but not on all of them. Nordic Escapes includes neither, ToTheNorth asks you to dress warmly in layers, Into North lends clothes and boots only on request, and Wonderlapland and Northern Future want your own boots or sturdy shoes. In every case bring a warm base layer, a hat and gloves.
Pick one day, or the first and last day of your stay in Rovaniemi. We look up the booking calendar of every snowshoe tour on this site and list the ones with places left.

Each snowshoe price is per adult and is read from GetYourGuide or Viator when the page opens, so a listing with a hotel surcharge or a second option can cost more on the booking page.
Each card starts with pickup and clothing. Open it for the full list of what is included and who the operator turns away.
Overall and boots are lent, and the walk ends with sausages and hot blueberry juice at a fire. Needs at least two guests to run, four on Sundays.

Pickup, clothing, food and age limits as the operator lists them on the booking page.
Thermal overall and boots, woollen socks and mittens are lent. Transfer from the centre or Santa Claus Village if you need it.
A guided snowshoe walk in the backcountry around Apukka Resort at a relaxed pace, with a stop for hot drinks. The operator notes that the snowy terrain still takes some physical effort.

The guide picks old forest, a frozen lake or a hilltop to suit the group and lights a fire with flint and steel. Pickup only outside the centre.
An evening snowshoe walk in a group of at most 8. The guide chooses a place that suits the group and gives a good chance of seeing the aurora if it appears, and lights a fire halfway with flint and steel. The northern lights cannot be guaranteed; the walk runs in any weather.
Pickup, clothing, food and age limits as the operator lists them on the booking page.
NordicUnique Travels lists an overall and boots. Wild about Lapland lends professional winter clothing and boots on its day trip and overalls and boots on its night walk, yet still asks you to dress for the weather. Apukka Resort has the longest list: thermal overall, thermal boots, woollen socks and mittens. Aihki Adventures includes professional winter clothes, Lapland Welcome winter adventure gear. On the Viator side, Wild Nordic Finland lends an overall, boots, gloves, woollen socks and a scarf on its midday walk.
Arctic GM lists thermal overalls and poles but no boots. Beyond Arctic lends warm clothing and winter boots if you need them, and Into North only if you ask in advance, so mention it when you book. Northern Future lends winter clothing but asks you to bring your own gloves and winter boots. Wonderlapland lists winter sports gear as not included on its night hike and asks for warm clothing and sturdy, waterproof shoes. East Lapland Group hands out poles and a head torch and recommends long-shafted boots, as the snow can be deep.
Nordic Escapes states that overalls and boots are not included, and ToTheNorth asks you to dress warmly in layers. If you packed only a city coat and trainers, choose another tour or buy proper winter boots first.
Even with a borrowed overall, what you wear underneath decides how warm you stay. Wool or synthetic base layers, a fleece or warm jumper, a hat that covers your ears and warm gloves or mittens are the basics, plus a spare pair of gloves if yours get wet at the fire. The average temperature at Rovaniemi airport is −10.3 °C in January and February, and much colder days are recorded; on the walk you warm up, at the fire and on evening tours you stand still. Snowshoes strap over your boots, so the boots underneath need to keep your feet warm and dry.
Where a listing lends clothing but does not mention children's sizes, ask the operator before you book. Northern Future provides sleds for children who get tired. More on the page about snowshoeing with children.
Guests praise operators that hand out the right boots and give advice on layers. None of the English critical reviews is about clothing; the complaints we read concern broken equipment and short walks.
“Very friendly instructor. The resort provides transportation, warm clothes and all required equipment. Would definitely recommend.”
“Teo was a great guide! He took care of each one of the tour members, gave suggestions on which was the best apparel for the day out and dedicated the entire couple of hours snowshoeing trough the wilderness. The pace was comfortable allowing people like me (always falling into deep snow) to have fun and enjoy. View in several spots was truly amazing. Best of all 4 guest and 1 guide, full attention and dedication. Thanks!”
“Very fun activity! We had Ewa as our tour guide and she was very friendly. The snowshoes were easy to get used to but it is a bit of a workout using them! Overall it was great and it felt really cool to be walking over a frozen lake :)”
“I really enjoyed this experience. The uphill hike was tough, but the views throughout were absolutely beautiful and then the walk back afterwards was much easier as downhill. The snow shoes were tricky to get used to at first but once you have the hang of it they are absolutely fine. Our guide Lina made sure we were ok with the pace and kept checking on us. She was more than happy to to take photos for us too.”
