Snowshoe tours from Rovaniemi share a pattern: a drive out of town, a short lesson in strapping on the snowshoes, a walk through spruce forest or over a frozen lake, a break at a fire. The walk itself is rarely what separates them. We based the verdict on the points each listing states in writing, in the order they tend to matter on the day.
Small group and a guide with time
Into North caps its groups at 8 and runs the longest outing on the site at four and a half hours, so the walk is not squeezed between the drive and the fire. The listing rates it easy and suitable for all fitness levels, and the guide sends you a few photos afterwards. Arctic GM, Beyond Arctic, Nordic Escapes and Wild about Lapland also stop at 8. NordicUnique Travels states no maximum at all.
Pickup when you stay in the centre
Into North collects within 10 km of the centre, ToTheNorth and Arctic GM at your accommodation, NordicUnique Travels at selected hotels within 10 km. Wild about Lapland is the exception that catches people out: on its day trip and on its night walk it no longer picks up in the city centre or near its office, so you walk to the meeting point. That is why its night walk wins the evening category only with this caveat.
Clothing and boots
Our first choice has one weak point: Into North lends winter clothes and boots only if you ask. Mention it when you book, or choose a tour that lists them as standard: NordicUnique Travels, Wild about Lapland and Apukka Resort, whose list adds woollen socks and mittens. ToTheNorth asks you to dress in warm layers, and Nordic Escapes states that overalls and boots are not included. The clothing page lists every tour.
A meal instead of a snack
Grilled sausages and a hot drink are the usual stop. ToTheNorth is the tour that serves a lunch, cooked over the fire in a teepee, and asks for dietary needs in advance. NordicUnique Travels, Into North and Northern Future name vegetarian or vegan options on request. More on the page about food at the fire.
Daylight or the evening sky
The evening walks trade the view of the forest for a chance of northern lights. Wild about Lapland lights its fire with flint and steel and picks a forest, frozen lake or hilltop to suit the group. Aihki Adventures changes its route every night with the forecast and waits at a viewpoint with a cabin nearby. Wonderlapland walks to a watchtower and refunds nothing if the aurora stays away. None of them can promise the lights. See snowshoeing after dark.
Minimum age
Into North starts at 10, which rules it out for many families. Beyond Arctic accepts children from 6 and arranges private tours for younger ones; Wild about Lapland's day trip takes children from 5, with the pickup rule above. Arctic GM and East Lapland Group start at 12. The page on snowshoeing with children has every age limit.
Travelling alone
Several tours need a minimum number of guests to run: NordicUnique Travels two on weekdays and Saturdays and four on Sundays and public holidays, Nordic Escapes two paying adults, Arctic GM two. Beyond Arctic asks solo travellers to contact the booking platform for a single booking. If the minimum is not met, these operators move the tour or refund it.
